Background of the Study

Traditional media, including radio and newspapers, have been the cornerstone of political communication, particularly in regions with limited access to modern communication technologies (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024). In Bida LGA, Niger State, radio stations and local newspapers play a critical role in informing the public about political developments, candidates’ positions, and election-related activities (Aminu & Haruna, 2023). These media outlets help bridge the information gap in rural areas, where social media penetration is low, and they serve as essential tools for civic education and voter mobilization (Bello & Sulaimon, 2023). This study explores the role of traditional media, specifically radio and newspapers, in political communication during the 2023 elections in Bida LGA, examining their effectiveness in shaping public opinion and influencing electoral behavior.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the acknowledged role of traditional media in political communication, the specific impact of radio and newspaper coverage on political engagement and voter behavior in Bida LGA remains under-researched. While these media forms have been integral in past elections, their current relevance and effectiveness in the digital age are questioned, particularly in rural areas where exposure to modern media platforms like social media may be limited (Kasim & Dangana, 2023). This study aims to assess the role of radio and newspaper coverage in political communication and voter decision-making in Bida LGA during the 2023 elections.

  1. To evaluate the role of traditional media (radio and newspapers) in shaping political communication in Bida LGA.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of radio and newspaper coverage in informing voters about political candidates and issues during the 2023 elections.

  3. To examine the influence of traditional media on voter behavior and political participation in Bida LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does radio and newspaper coverage influence political communication in Bida LGA?

  2. How effective are radio and newspapers in informing voters about political candidates and issues during the 2023 elections?

  3. What impact does traditional media coverage have on voter behavior and participation in Bida LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Radio and newspaper coverage significantly influence political communication in Bida LGA.

  2. Traditional media, including radio and newspapers, effectively inform voters about political candidates and issues.

  3. Traditional media coverage has a measurable impact on voter behavior and participation in Bida LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the continued relevance of traditional media in political communication in rural areas. The findings will be valuable for political parties, media organizations, and policymakers seeking to maximize the impact of traditional media in electoral campaigns, especially in less digitally connected regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on Bida LGA, Niger State, and will analyze the role of radio and newspapers in political communication during the 2023 elections. The study does not cover the role of other forms of media such as social media or television.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Traditional Media: Media outlets such as radio stations and newspapers that have been in existence for a long time, often serving as primary sources of information.

  • Political Communication: The process through which political information, messages, and news are disseminated to the public, influencing political awareness and decisions.
